FREDERICTON (CNB) -- The following is a statement from Premier Shawn Graham on Roger Duguay's election as leader of the New Democratic Party of New Brunswick.
"I wish to offer my congratulations to Roger Duguay on his election as New Brunswick NDP leader at their leadership conference in Moncton this past weekend.
"As party leader, Mr. Duguay has a challenge to rebuild the NDP in New Brunswick - a task I'm sure he will attack with vigour.
"Mr. Duguay's passion for helping those who are socially disadvantaged and his involvement with the NDP for the past 25 years is to be commended. He has committed to contributing to political discussion between now and the next general election, and I look forward to his input.
"I'd also like to thank Pat Hanratty for his work as interim leader. He has taken his role seriously and has spoken out on social and political issues over the past 11 months.
"As premier and on behalf of all New Brunswickers, I want to offer best wishes to Mr. Duguay as he leads the NDP party into the next general election in 2010."
