FREDERICTON (CNB) -- As part of the changes to cabinet announced today by Premier Shawn Graham, a minister and deputy minister were appointed to work with the province's community non-profit sector.
"I am pleased to appoint Carmel Robichaud as minister and Chris Baker as deputy minister in response to a key recommendation made in the non-profit Task Force Report "Blueprint for Action-Building, a foundation for Self-Sufficiency," Graham said.
Carmel Robichaud was appointed Minister responsible for Community Non-Profit Organizations in addition to being named Minister of Local Government. Chris Baker, deputy minister of Policy and Priorities in the Executive Council Office, assumes additional responsibilities as deputy minister for Community Non-Profit Organizations.
The primary task of the new portfolio will be to address the recommendations of the Premier's Task Force on the Community Non-Profit Sector. The task force was chaired by former federal minister Claudette Bradshaw and visited every region of New Brunswick between January and June 2007 to seek recommendations from volunteers and non-profit organizations.
In its report, the task Force called for a revitalized partnership between the Province and the voluntary sector, including improvements in the respect and recognition that the sector receives from government. The recommendations contained in the final report touch on all levels of government.
"I look forward to taking on this critical portfolio and to working more closely with community non-profit groups throughout New Brunswick," Robichaud said. "The premier has given us a very challenging mandate. In addition to addressing the recommendations of the task force, we must make certain that community non-profit organizations are encouraged to contribute to making New Brunswick - and all New Brunswickers - self-sufficient."
