FREDERICTON (CNB) - A congratulatory reception was held today at Old Government House in honour of New Brunswick's participants at the 2008 Olympic / Paralympic Games in Beijing, China.
Lt.-Gov. Herménégilde Chiasson, Premier Shawn Graham, and Wellness, Culture and Sport Minister Hédard Albert were in attendance.
"These athletes are the pride of our province, and, on behalf of all New Brunswickers, I want to say: well done everyone," Graham said. "Each and every one of these athletes showed us and showed the world that when you want something hard enough, you can get there. Their perseverance, hard work and dedication to their sport have resulted in great success at the international level. They are not only great ambassadors for the Olympic and Paralympic movement in Canada, but they are also great ambassadors for our province."
Athletes, coaches, mission staff, officials and a team leader attended the reception.
"I want to congratulate the coaches and members of the mission staff who assisted our athletes at the Beijing 2008 Olympic / Paralympic Games," said Albert "We must commend them for the countless hours they committed to ensure that our athletes had a chance to compete and excel. We must not forget to honour our officials who've been selected by their national sport organization to participate at these games. Their selection and recognition is truly deserved."
Albert took the opportunity to salute the families, friends and sponsors who contribute to an individual's sporting success.
Graham and Albert presented each New Brunswick member of Team Canada with a gift to show all New Brunswickers' admiration for their outstanding performance.
New Brunswick was represented within Team Canada by five athletes, one team leader, two coaches, three officials and four mission staff, along with one Olympic Youth Academy participant.
