Oct. 18, 2008

FREDERICTON (CNB) - Following is a statement from Premier Shawn Graham on David Alward's election as leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick on Saturday, Oct. 18:

On behalf of the province and all New Brunswickers, I wish to congratulate David Alward on his election as leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick at its leadership convention in Fredericton today.

In this role, Mr. Alward now assumes the responsibility of ensuring that his party will be an effective voice for the people of the ridings it represents; a positive contributor to debate on issues of public interest; and a proponent of the well-being of all New Brunswickers. I commend him for his willingness to take on this responsibility and to serve the people in every region of our province.

Though we may disagree on matters of public policy, I believe Mr. Alward shares my firm commitment to act in the best interests of all New Brunswickers. I look forward to engaging in constructive debate with him in the period leading up to the next provincial election in 2010 as we work together toward self-sufficiency.

On this occasion, I would also like to thank Jeannot Volpé for his work as interim party leader since former premier Bernard Lord stepped down in January 2007. In this role, Mr. Volpé demonstrated the steadfast dedication to work for the common good that New Brunswickers expect and deserve from all those who hold public office in our province.
