FREDERICTON (CNB) - Following is a statement from Premier Shawn Graham on Prime Minister Stephen Harper's new cabinet appointments:

I would like to extend my congratulations to Prime Minister Harper and his newly appointed cabinet ministers.

I am very pleased that Greg Thompson remains in cabinet as minister of veterans affairs. He has been a strong supporter of New Brunswick's self-sufficiency agenda and priorities, and I look forward to continuing our very positive working relationship.

I'd like to offer my congratulations to Keith Ashfield ,who has today been selected by the prime minister to serve as minister of state responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. This is a very important portfolio for the future prosperity and growth of the province and the entire Atlantic region.

I am confident that ministers Thompson and Ashfield have a keen grasp of the important issues facing our province, and that they will provide a strong voice for all New Brunswickers at the federal cabinet table.

To move New Brunswick toward self-sufficiency, it is vital that we have a strong working relationship with the federal government. I look forward to working closely with our New Brunswick members of parliament as well as all federal departments and ministers to make our province stronger and more self-reliant.
