FREDERICTON (CNB) - Premier Shawn Graham today announced the resignation of Chris Baker, deputy minister and secretary for the policy and priorities committee of cabinet.

"I sincerely thank Chris for his contributions over the past two years," Graham said. "He has served this government and the province with professionalism and dedication. I wish him the best as he embarks upon a new chapter in his career."

Prior to his appointment as deputy minister in 2006, Baker served as chief of staff to Graham in his role as leader of the official Opposition. As president of his own consulting firm, he gained considerable expertise in public policy, public opinion consultancy, strategic planning and communications.

From November 1997 to April 2003, Baker re-established and led the Ottawa office of the Environics Research Group. In August 1999, he became director of the FOCUS CANADA quarterly, Canada's longest-running public policy syndicated product. Prior to joining Environics, he was employed in both the public and private sectors as a senior public opinion researcher. He also served as special assistant responsible for opinion research in the office of the prime minister, where he provided strategic advice and recommendations concerning a diverse range of political and policy issues.

Baker's resignation is effective immediately.
