New Year's message from the Premier (08/12/30)

NB 1875

Dec. 30, 2008

FREDERICTON (CNB) - Following is Premier Shawn Graham's New Year's message for 2009:

As we prepare to turn the page on another year, it is a time for reflection and hope. When we began 2008, we looked ahead to a year of transition. We knew there would be transformational change on many fronts - in education, in health care, in post-secondary education - and we have seen many of those changes begin to take shape.

This was a year of change and challenge. We have been tested, as individuals and as a province, in 2008. As floodwaters rose in May, help poured in from around the province. When we mourned the tragedy of lives cut short here at home and on battlefields abroad, we were united in our grief. And, now, as we are confronted by the most significant global economic downturn in generations, New Brunswickers are drawing on their resilience, ingenuity and spirit of self-reliance.

It is this spirit that fills me with hope as we look forward to the coming year. I am confident that, because of the steps we have taken as a government and because of the spirit of New Brunswickers, we will not only make it through the challenges that lie ahead, we will be stronger on the other side. We will be that much closer to our goal of a self-sufficient New Brunswick.

The year 2009 presents an opportunity for each of us. Talents, strengths and ideas that lie undiscovered in times of prosperity can be awoken by times of adversity.

On Thursday, we will awake to a new year, a fresh start, a new beginning. It will be a chance for each of us to be better, to be part of something bigger than ourselves and to be part of a new chapter for the province we call home.

My wife, Roxanne, and I hope that 2008 brought many joys and many great memories to each of you. For the generosity you have shown us over this past year, may you be repaid with many blessings in 2009.
