EDITOR'S NOTE: The following joint statement was issued today by Premier Shawn Graham and official Opposition leader David Alward with respect to proposed changes to Canadian Blood Services operations in Atlantic Canada:
All New Brunswickers are concerned by the announcement that Canadian Blood Services (CBS) will stop operating a blood production and distribution facility in Saint John by 2012.
The Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick unanimously passed an official Opposition motion on Thursday, April 2, urging all levels of government to work together to preserve the CBS operations that currently exist in Saint John.
Further to this action, we are pleased to announce today that we have agreed to appoint a non-partisan task force to work on behalf of New Brunswickers to maintain these services in Saint John. Two representatives from the government and two representatives from the official Opposition will work with community representatives to argue New Brunswick's case.
Details on the membership of the task force and its terms of reference will be released in the coming days.
