Premier's statement / Election of Greg Selinger as leader of Manitoba NDP and premier (09/10/19)

NB 1599

Oct. 19, 2009

FREDERICTON (CNB) - The following statement from Premier Shawn Graham on the election of Greg Selinger as leader of the Manitoba New Democratic Party and the province's next premier was issued today.

I want to offer my congratulations to Greg Selinger on his election as the new leader of the New Democratic Party of Manitoba, and on his swearing-in as premier of Manitoba. Mr. Selinger has established a solid reputation as Manitoba's finance minister over the past 10 years, and I know that he will bring that same level of discipline and insight to the role of premier.

Manitoba and New Brunswick have many things in common. We are provinces that live in close proximity to nature. We share an abundance of natural resource industries, as well as thriving technology sectors of the new economy. In working closely with Manitoba under former premier Gary Doer, we have shared a mutual desire to improve trade relations between provinces, and have worked as part of the Council of the Federation to bring down barriers.

We will continue to build upon the great working and trade relationship that our two provinces have developed, and I look forward to working with him and his team to move the relationship forward for both provinces.

As premier, and on behalf of all New Brunswickers, I offer best wishes to Premier Selinger and his government, and pledge my and our continued support and friendship.
