FREDERICTON (CNB) - Premier Shawn Graham has appointed Wellness, Culture and Sport Minister Hédard Albert to be acting minister of tourism and parks, replacing Saint John Fundy MLA Stuart Jamieson.

"I asked Stuart Jamieson to step down from cabinet late today," said Graham. "Mr. Jamieson has broken cabinet solidarity and leaves me no choice but to ask him to step aside. I have the utmost respect for Mr. Jamieson, and it has been an honour to serve with him. However, the custom of cabinet consensus must be maintained."

Jamieson has indicated that, while he believes the energy agreement between Quebec and New Brunswick is in the best interest of the province, he cannot support it with a vote in the legislature. Graham said this was not the direction that cabinet and caucus has chosen to take, prompting the removal of Jamieson from cabinet.

Albert will keep his present portfolio as minister of wellness, culture and sport and minister responsible for the Francophonie. He becomes the acting minister of tourism and parks effective immediately.
