Dates announced for inquest into Bathurst accident (09/02/24)

NB 210

Feb. 24, 2009

FREDERICTON (CNB) - Details of the inquest into the Jan. 12, 2008, van crash that killed eight people in northern New Brunswick were announced today by acting Chief Coroner Greg Forestell.

The inquest will take place May 4-15, at the Bathurst Courthouse. Forestell will be the presiding coroner, while George Chiasson will act as coroner's counsel.

The coroner's service investigates all sudden and unexpected deaths to ensure that no such death is overlooked, concealed or ignored.

The decision to hold an inquest was announced in December 2008.

An inquest is held if the coroner determines that it would be beneficial in addressing community concern about a death, assisting in finding information about the deceased or circumstances surrounding a death, and/or drawing attention to a cause of death if such awareness may prevent future deaths.
