FREDERICTON (CNB) - The recommendations of the Child Death Review Committee relating the death of a child whose family was known to Child Protection Services, have been released by Chief Coroner Gregory Forestell.
The committee investigates the deaths of children younger than 19, who were in the legal care of the minister of Social Development, or whose families were in contact with the child protection system within 12 months before the child's death.
The committee made the following recommendations:
The Department of Social Development will respond to these recommendations within the 45-day time frame established in the committee's terms of reference. The department is studying an internal review that contained several recommendations on the Child in Care Program, and is expected to respond to that review when they respond to the committee recommendations.
The Child Death Review Committee was transferred from the Department of Social Development in 2009 and now advises the Office of the Chief Coroner, Department of Public Safety.
