The grants will fund fire training exercises and other training at the association's annual workshop in Miramichi in September, and they will also help fund the annual general meeting.

The grants include $46,000 from the Department of Public Safety and $6,000 from the Department of Local Government.

"We have dedicated volunteer firefighters throughout the province, and our communities have grown to rely upon them in the event of an emergency," said Public Safety Minister and Solicitor General John W. Foran. "The government is pleased to continue to support volunteer firefighters and the crucial service they provide our communities. The sustainability and success of their organizations is critically important to continue to build a safer New Brunswick."

The enhanced volunteer firefighter training program can provide basic firefighter Level 1 training for up to 400 volunteer firefighters each year within the nine firefighters' associations, at no cost to local fire departments.

"Volunteer firefighters play an important role in communities across the province," said Local Government Minister Chris Collins. "Our government is proud to support these men and women as they strive to protect the strong and viable communities which are a cornerstone of a self-sufficient New Brunswick."
