MIRAMICHI (CNB) - The provincial government is investing $500,000 in the Miramichi Landings project, Public Safety Minister John Foran announced today.
"Miramichi Landings is an important ecotourism project for the Miramichi region," said Foran. "The tourism sector plays an important role in our provincial economy, and in our overall goal of self-sufficiency."
Bill Fraser, MLA for Miramichi-Bay-du-Vin, Miramichi Mayor Gerry Cormier, and Carol Estey, chairman of the board of directors of Miramichi Landings, joined Foran for the announcement.
"We are very excited about the vote of confidence that the province has given us, and we look forward a continued partnership with them," said Estey. "This announcement is a major milestone event for Miramichi Landings. It not only moves us forward in our development of Phase II of Miramichi Landings, but also recognizes the importance of experiential tourism in our project."
Funding provided through the Regional Development Corporation will be used toward Phase II of the project, formerly known as the Miramichi Open River Ecomuseum. The second phase calls for the development of the architectural site plans for Middle Island and Ritchie Wharf, two integral sites in the project.
