MONCTON (CNB) - The provincial government is making an investment to support the Moncton 2010 International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Junior Championships. Premier Shawn Graham made the announcement today.
"The 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships offer a great opportunity for athletes from around the world to show their athletic skills," said Graham. "In addition, these championships will raise Greater Moncton and New Brunswick's international profile."
The Regional Development Corporation is investing $1 million to help cover operational costs.
The championships - featuring an estimated 2,000 athletes, coaches and officials from 170 countries - will be held July 19-26 at the new world-class Stade Moncton 2010 Stadium on the campus of the Université de Moncton. The outdoor, multi-purpose stadium will be the biggest in Atlantic Canada, with seating for 10,000.
"This additional support from the Province of New Brunswick showcases its commitment to making these championships a world-class event second to none," said Larry Nelson, president of the local organizing committee for Moncton 2010 - IAAF World Junior Championships. "We are thankful to have the province as a partner as we present some of the world's best athletes competing for their nations' glory. Together, we will welcome the world to New Brunswick and show just how amazing a host New Brunswick can be."
The event, which includes 44 medal events over six days of competition, will be seen by millions of viewers in 160 countries. Hundreds of provincial, national and international media are expected in Moncton to cover the competition.
