BLACKVILLE (CNB) - The new Blackville Community Centre was officially opened today. The provincial and federal governments as well as the Village of Blackville invested in the project.
The opening was attended by Human Resources Minister Rick Brewer, Miramichi MP Tilly O'Neill-Gordon and Blackville Mayor Glen Hollowood.
"Today's celebration of the new community facility truly shows that our government can work with other levels of government to help better our communities," said Brewer. "Our investment will ensure this facility continues to play a vital role in the life of the community of Blackville and the Miramichi region."
Brewer was speaking on behalf of Business New Brunswick Minister Victor Boudreau, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.
"Our government, through the Economic Action Plan, is taking steps to stimulate the economies of communities hard hit by the recent economic downturn," said O'Neill-Gordon. "This investment has assisted the community of Blackville in constructing a multi-functional centre that will serve as the new home for business development, recreation, and social space for all members of the community to use."
O'Neill-Gordon was speaking on behalf of National Revenue Minister Keith Ashfield, who is also the minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and minister for the Atlantic Gateway
"On behalf of our community, I would like to thank the governments of Canada and New Brunswick for their investment, which is sure to improve the quality of life for our residents," said Hollowood. "This centre will serve our business community as well as provide a gathering place for social events for members of our community."
The centre provides a meeting place for various groups in the area. Businesspeople will have access to a large multi-functional room where they may conduct training and hold conferences. A computer access area is available to help local unemployed workers prepare for and seek employment.
The federal and New Brunswick governments each invested $350,000 for a total of $700,000, while the Village of Blackville invested $404,306.
