Minister's statement: Special-Care Home Week in New Brunswick (09/08/17)

NB 1138

Aug. 17, 2009

FREDERICTON (CNB) - The following message was issued today by Minister of State for Seniors Brian Kenny in recognition of Special-Care Home Week in New Brunswick, Aug 17-21.

Special-care homes in New Brunswick play an important role in providing options for seniors who need support and care. Their contribution to the long-term care system will continue to prove significant as the province's population ages rapidly over the next several years.

Each year, about $76 million is invested in special-care home services in New Brunswick. The province's investments in the sector have increased by $25 million since 2006, due in part to increases in subsidies for residents and to an increase in the total number of residents. New Brunswick has 430 special-care homes providing services to 4,575 residents, the majority of whom are seniors.

Throughout the province, special-care homes are operating as private sector businesses and employers, providing professional care and services to their residents. I thank the management and staff of special-care homes for their ongoing commitment to quality care and their compassion for residents. We value the work you do.
