FREDERICTON (CNB) - Minister of State for Seniors Brian Kenny has issued the following statement in recognition of International Day of Older Persons, Thursday, Oct. 1:
Today, we join with others around the world in observing this special day celebrating the contributions of older persons and to pay tribute to all they have given and continue to give to our lives.
Seniors everywhere have a great deal of experience, wisdom and knowledge to offer. As a growing population, they are a voice to be heard. They have faced life's challenges with courage and conviction to create the province we are proud to call home.
This year's theme for International Day of Older Persons is Toward a Society of All Ages, signifying social inclusion, dignity and respect, and the promotion and protection of human rights for all.
On this important occasion, we can examine the issues that affect lives of older persons. We can also consider how each of us can do more to make the world a better place where elder abuse does not exist; and where seniors have the opportunity to participate and be healthy, active, safe and secure no matter where they live.
EDITOR'S NOTE: International Day of Older Persons was first marked by the General Assembly of the United Nations on Oct. 1, 1991.
