BATHURST (CNB) - There was a sod-turning event today for an expansion to Foyer Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes in Bathurst. The expansion will create 30 new beds at the nursing home.
Minister of State for Seniors Cheryl Lavoie and Tourism and Parks Minister Brian Kenny participated in the event.
"There is an urgent need to reduce the waiting list for nursing home beds in the Bathurst region," said Lavoie. "The new expansion will help meet this demand, while also enhancing services for nursing home residents. This important project is part of our new $400 million capital renewal and replacement plan to upgrade and improve nursing home infrastructure around the province."
Construction at Foyer Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes will start immediately, with completion scheduled for the spring of 2012.
The infrastructure improvements will provide more spacious, energy-efficient facilities, new equipment and better ventilation, improved quality of space and more privacy and personal space for nursing home residents.
About 80 construction-related jobs will be created in the region as a result of the $9 million project.
The sod turning was held as part of Nursing Home Week in New Brunswick.
