FREDERICTON (CNB) - A new birth certificate using state-of-the-art security features is now available to people born in New Brunswick. Made of high-tech polymer material and containing more than 20 security features, the certificates are designed to be durable and to protect against counterfeiting and tampering.
Greg Byrne, minister of business New Brunswick and the minister responsible for Service New Brunswick said that this new standard for birth certificates is the most secure in the world.
"Better protection against identity theft and tampering is needed in today's world," said Byrne. "In the interest of security, it's important to take advantage of changing technology."
While current certificates continue to be valid, legal documents, New Brunswick-born individuals have the option of purchasing a new one. The costs will remain at $20 for the short form and $25 for the long form, until Nov. 1, when they will increase to $25 and $30, respectively. New parents will continue to receive a short-form birth certificate at no charge.
People born in New Brunswick may apply for a new birth certificate at any Service New Brunswick location, at the Service New Brunswick website, or by mail at Service New Brunswick, Vital Statistics, P.O. Box 1998, Fredericton, N.B., E3B 5G4.
