Official opening of Provincial Archives Complex (03/09/26)

NB 838

Sept. 26, 2003

FREDERICTON (CNB) - Premier Bernard Lord today dedicated the recently-expanded Provincial Archives facilities to the memory of former Premier Richard Bennett Hatfield.

"The official opening of this new facility has provided us an opportunity to commemorate a significant New Brunswicker, Richard Bennett Hatfield," Lord said. "He was New Brunswick's longest-serving premier and one of Canada's true statesmen."

The Richard Bennett Hatfield Archives Complex is comprised of the original Bonar Law-Bennett Building, which has housed the Provincial Archives since 1968, and the new Archives Storage Facility, a recently completed state-of-the-art building that will house permanently valuable records.

Supply and Services Minister Dale Graham, whose department managed the archives expansion project, said the new $5 million storage facility fulfills a significant capital commitment by the provincial government. "I congratulate the architectural firm of Fellows & Company Ltd. and the general contractor, Springhill Construction Ltd., for their outstanding work, as well as staff of the archives and the Department of Supply and Services for their dedication and hard work."

The new facility, attached to the original archives on the UNB Fredericton campus, is linked by a walkthrough. It features 1,650 cu. m. (55,000 cu. ft.) of floor-to-ceiling high-density shelving. Stringent environmental controls ensuring cool conditions and appropriate levels of humidity year-round will provide optimum storage that will significantly extend the life of paper records. A separate cold storage vault will meet the specialized needs of master microfilms and moving images which were not achievable in the original facility.

The general public is invited to tour the new facilities at open houses scheduled for Monday, Sept. 29 and Tuesday, Sept. 30, 12 noon - 4 p.m.
