MIRAMICHI (CNB) - The provincial government has sold a portion of the former CFB Chatham property to the City of Miramichi for $1. Supply and Services Minister Ed Doherty made the announcement today.

The 2.8-hectare (seven-acre) property located on Mahar Street includes three ballfields and a two-court tennis facility. The city has operated and maintained the recreational facilities since 1997.

"I am very pleased that we are able to formally transfer this property to the people of Miramichi," said Doherty. "The city has made a significant investment in the recreational facilities on the property over the years, and this transaction will facilitate planning for its future development."

"Our city strives to promote a healthy, active lifestyle for all our residents," said Miramichi Mayor Gerry Cormier. "Now that we will be the owners of this property we will have the ability to carry out improvements and maximize the recreational benefits it provides to our residents."

Improvements planned for this year include $10,000 for repairs to the ballfields and refurbishment of the tennis courts.
