FREDERICTON (CNB) -- Students planning to attend community college and are interested in applying for the second year of the Wage Gap Action Plan scholarship program have until May 31 to apply. This scholarship is open to women and men who want to pursue non-traditional training programs at New Brunswick Community College.
The scholarship program was introduced in 2006 as part of the government's Wage Gap Action Plan. It is intended to encourage people entering their first year at community college to seek careers in trades, technology and others sectors where participation to date by men and women has been limited. A total of 57 scholarships were awarded for the 2006-2007 academic year.
"This innovative scholarship program is open to all people who are considering a career in a profession in which either gender have not traditionally participated," said Family and Community Services Minister Carmel Robichaud, Minister responsible for the Status of Women. "The students who are trained thanks to these scholarships will help our province to address labour shortages, as we work to expand our economy, make New Brunswick more self-sufficient, and help reduce the wage gap in our province."
Each scholarship will have a maximum value of $2,600, equal in value to one-year full tuition at New Brunswick Community College, up to program total of $150,000 per year. Scholarships will be awarded regardless of any other financial assistance applicants may have received.
"If you have been accepted into an eligible regular program of study at one of our colleges, whether you are continuing your education or re-entering the school system as a mature student, I encourage you to apply for one of these scholarships," Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Ed Doherty said. "This program helps New Brunswickers train for these non-traditional careers, and ensures that students are exposed to a wider variety of career options."
To apply, students must complete an application form and provide a brief essay indicating their career interests. Applications and additional information about the scholarships are available online at the NBCC website.
Applications must be submitted to the Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour no later than May 31. Successful applicants will be notified no later than June 15.
