FREDERICTON (CNB) -- Fifty-seven students enrolled in the New Brunswick Community College system have been awarded Wage Gap Action Plan scholarships for 2007-2008. The announcement was made today by Family and Community Services Minister Carmel Robichaud, Minister responsible for the Status of Women, and Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minster Ed Doherty.

"These 57 students represent the best and brightest students enrolled in our community college system. We are proud to support them with the Wage Gap Scholarship as they embark on the challenge of a non-traditional profession and we wish them all the best as they study and prepare to join our New Brunswick workforce," Robichaud said. "This scholarship program helps New Brunswick students train for these non-traditional careers, and ensures they can explore a wider variety of career options."

The scholarship program was introduced in 2006 as part of the government's Wage Gap Action Plan. It is intended to encourage people entering their first year at community college to seek careers in trades, technology and others sectors where participation to date by men and women has been limited. The goal of the scholarship program is to help reduce the impact which job clustering has on New Brunswick's wage gap.

Each non-renewable scholarship awarded has a value of $2,600, equal in value to one-year full tuition at community college, up to the program total of $150,000 per year. Fifty-seven scholarships were awarded for the 2006-2007 academic year. The Province also employs two mentors who work with students in non-traditional programs.

"The women and men who have accepted the challenge of pursuing a non-traditional career will help us reduce the wage gap in our province," Doherty said. "This spirit of exploration and desire to be different will be essential for New Brunswick to deal with labour shortages in the skilled trades, and grow our economy as we work to become self-sufficient."
