FREDERICTON (CNB) - The 53 recipients of the Wage Gap Action Plan scholarship for 2008 were announced today by Mary Schryer, minister responsible for the status of women.
A total of 44 women and nine men were awarded the scholarships, which will cover their tuitions for the first year. Another five scholarships will be awarded in the fall to students attending New Brunswick Community College-contracted non-traditional training programs.
"For this year, we are proud to provide our Wage Gap Action Plan scholarships to students representing such a wide range of demographics and skill sets," Schryer said. "Our 2008 recipients include everyone from single mothers to students with disabilities, to mature students looking to make their way back into the workforce."
The Wage Gap Action Plan scholarship is an initiative of the Women's Issues Branch, Executive Council Office. It is a key element of New Brunswick's Five-Year Wage Gap Action Plan: Facing the Economic Imperative.
The scholarship was established to encourage men and women to examine non-traditional careers. For example, women entering non-traditional training programs such as welding, electrical engineering technology, and carpentry, and men entering non-traditional training programs such as office administration, early childhood education or practical nursing, are all fields where the other gender is a majority.
The goal of the scholarship program is to reduce the influence that job clustering has on New Brunswick's wage gap.
Each scholarship has a maximum value of $2,600. This is equivalent to one-year full tuition at New Brunswick Community College, with up to $150,000 in scholarships being awarded each year.
"The Wage Gap scholarship is a great way of introducing people to non-traditional areas within our workforce," said Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Ed Doherty. "For the third year in a row, this innovative scholarship is in high demand, as we currently have a waiting list. This demonstrates the appetite in our province for the quality training programs offered through our community colleges."
