FREDERICTON (CNB) - Various activities are being held around the province in recognition of International Women's Day, and this year's theme, Strong Women. Strong Canada. Strong World.
Health Minister Mary Schryer, who is also the minister responsible for the status of women, said the event is a major day of global celebration for the economic, political, and social achievements of women past, present, and future.
"This is a day to celebrate women everywhere," said Schryer. "International Women's Day encourages us to take stock of just how far we've come, and reminds us that we still need to do much more to bring about true equality of condition and opportunity for women here in New Brunswick, Canada, and the world."
Community prayer ceremonies will be hosted by local MLAs this afternoon in Quispamsis, Moncton, Bathurst and Neguac.
The First Nations communities of Tobique, Eel River Bar, Burnt Church and Elsipogtog will also participate in the ceremonies by way of video conferencing, a first for the celebration. The National Research Council and Atlantic Canada's First Nation Help Desk, partners in the initiative, will provide the video-conferencing service.
"We encourage all New Brunswickers to join us in the celebration of this special day," Schryer said.
