Fines double for speeding in construction zones (08/07/07)

NB 994

July 7, 2008

FREDERICTON (CNB) - Drivers in New Brunswick are reminded that speeding in highway construction zones could result in a minimum fine of $280.

"Please think twice about speeding in construction zones," said Transportation Minister Denis Landry. "Construction workers are making the highways safer for drivers, and we are asking motorists to be responsible and make the highway safer for them."

About one-quarter of New Brunswickers admit to speeding in the 150 construction zones established on the province's roads on any summer day.

The stiffer fines are part of government's plan to improve highway safety in New Brunswick. They took effect Oct. 15, 2007.

In urban areas, the speed limit in a construction zone is 50 kilometres per hour unless otherwise posted. In other areas, it is 80 kilometres per hour unless otherwise posted. The start and end of the construction zone will be marked with orange signs.
