Premier responds to action committee report, makes funding announcement (08/08/06)

MIRAMICHI (CNB) - The government's response to recommendations by the Short Term Action Committee was released today in Miramichi by Premier Shawn Graham, who also made a job creation announcement concerning FatKat Animation Studios.

"I want to thank the Action Committee and the Short and Long Term Committees for their hard work and for providing government with short term recommendations that will help the region's economy," said Graham. "Our government is committed to helping the Miramichi region be better, be more successful, and be healthier. That is why our government has committed to support the city's wellness initiatives. We have also committed to funding the recommended transit service and we have committed to helping the local enterprise agency as it assists local entrepreneurs develop their business plans."

The Premier was joined at the announcement by Southwest Miramichi MLA Rick Brewer, Short Term Action Committee Chair Pat Finnigan, as well as Miramichi Mayor Gerry Cormier.

The Premier announced that the Government of New Brunswick would invest $60,000 to support the city's wellness initiatives. He also announced that the government would invest $650,000 to help the city buy new buses to support the recommendation of an improved transit system; this will include one bus that will be wheelchair accessible. The Premier also committed the government to helping the enterprise agency as it helps local entrepreneurs develop their business plans.

The Premier announced that the government would be providing a $500,000 loan guarantee to FatKat Animation to help the company access funding from institutions to aid in the continued growth and success of the company.

"The initiatives announced today are all part of our government's commitment to this region," added the Premier. "Continuing to make strategic investments and cultivating partnerships will help us achieve our goal of self-sufficiency by 2026.
