MIRAMICHI (CNB) - Miramichi is receiving new transit buses as the result of an investment of more than $421,000 by the federal government. Ottawa is providing the assistance through its Public Transit Capital Trust Fund.

"The Government of New Brunswick is pleased to work with the Government of Canada to deliver transit service in Miramichi," said Transportation Minister Denis Landry. "This continues our emphasis on the importance of sustainable transportation and a better, cleaner environment. We hope this agreement can be a model for other New Brunswick cities to develop transit systems."

Landry was joined by Public Safety Minister and Solicitor General John W. Foran and Miramichi-Bay-du-Vin MLA Bill Fraser.

"Our government is working with provincial partners to provide cities and communities with funding for their infrastructure needs that will support the economy and the environment," said Miramichi MP Tilly O'Neill-Gordon. "These new buses will be important additions to the city's transit system, creating new jobs and improving residents' daily commute."

With the funding, Miramichi will receive five buses, one of which will accommodate persons with disabilities. The municipality is finalizing its transit routes and the buses are scheduled to be in service in August.

"This is an exciting day for the residents in our community," said Miramichi Mayor Gerry Cormier. "We look forward to offering a service for our youth and seniors alike. A strong transit system is important for economic development. Potential employers are attracted to communities with regular bus service to and from key locations and residential areas."

The agreement to fund the buses was reached in December 2008. The federal funding will be administered by the Regional Development Corporation.

In its 2008 budget, the Government of Canada provided $500 million to the Public Transit Capital Trust, which helps to fund public transit projects such as rapid transit, transit buses, and high occupancy vehicle and bicycle lanes.
