DAVIS BROOK (CNB) - The provincial government is investing $5.2 million in seven highway projects throughout southern York and Sunbury counties. Transportation Minister Denis Landry made the announcement today while visiting a construction site between Harvey and McAdam.
Landry was on hand to announce that $1.9 million will be invested to pave 5.3 km of Route 4 from Davis Brook toward McAdam.
Landry also announced two projects valued at $636,000 to improve Route 3 in Harvey. These projects will involve the installation of gutters, a sidewalk and pavement on a 0.7-km section from the village centre to the southern municipal limit.
The Department of Transportation is also investing $1.36 million to replace a collapsed culvert on Route 102 at Kitchen Brook in the Parish of Kingsclear.
"Route 102 is a very important connection supporting daily traffic and tourism as part of the River Valley Scenic Drive," said Landry. "We have moved quickly to get this section of highway rebuilt as quickly as possible."
The roadwork announced by Landry also included a $1.31-million project to grade 1.6 km of Route 785 in Sunbury County. Two micro-surfacing contracts valued at $937,000 will be undertaken on 3.4 km of Route 3 between McCullough Road and Fletcher Road and 3.5 km of Route 101 between O'Leary Road and the Northeast Pipeline.
"As a rural MLA and former small business owner, I know how important these highways are for small communities," said Landry. "As part of our economic stimulus plan, this government is investing in all corners of the province, putting people to work and modernizing our roads and highways."
Funding for these initiatives are from the $385.8-million Department of Transportation capital budget for 2009-10.
