EEL RIVER BAR (CNB) - The Department of Transportation advises that the Eel River Bar #1 Bridge on Route 134 is fully closed to traffic, due to maintenance.
Crews are applying a coating surface to the concrete bridge deck to prevent deterioration from salt and water. Last year, this substance was used on other structures in New Brunswick as an alternative to asphalt. The bridge was built in 1956, and had its deck replaced a year ago.
"The Department of Transportation continues to be innovative and use best practices to extend the life cycle of our assets," said Transportation Minister Denis Landry. "By employing new, environmentally friendly products and practices in our work we are setting a positive example."
Crews hope to reopen the bridge by Friday, weather permitting.
Signage informing motorists of an alternate route is posted. Motorists are advised to take Cove Road as a detour to Route #11 (Dalhousie) and then proceed to Darlington Drive.
