REXTON (CNB) - Richibucto River Bridge #1, on Route 134 in Rexton, will be closed periodically over the next month due to construction.
The first planned closures will take place intermittently from Wednesday, Nov. 25, to Friday, Nov. 27. At least 10 closures will be required, and all are scheduled to begin after 8:30 a.m. The precise times will depend, however, on tidal conditions. The hope is to have the bridge reopened to one lane in the afternoons for school buses and motorists driving home from work.
"The contractor, in conjunction with district staff, will be undertaking a number of concrete pours along with pier upgrades on the west side of the bridge as part of this major rehabilitation project," said Transportation Minister Denis Landry. "There will be a large (23-tonne) boom truck in the work area, and this is why the bridge will require a full closure from time to time."
Atlantic Underground Services Ltd., of Riverview won the tender to do the $4.4-million project, funded through the Department of Transportation's capital program. A separate tender will be called to paint the bridge in 2010.
"This is a major investment to renew this 53-year-old steel and concrete bridge," said Premier Shawn Graham. "This project is part of our ambitious capital budget, which is creating jobs, strengthening our economy and modernizing infrastructure that is the foundation of sustainable long-term economic growth."
Route 11 is the suggested detour; signs will be posted to inform motorists. Emergency first responders have been notified.
