MIRAMICHI (CNB) - The provincial government has awarded its first highway contract of the 2010 construction season.
The Department of Transportation has awarded a contract to North Shore Construction Ltd. of Miramichi to undertake a 3.4-km paving project on Route 8 from the McKinnon Road interchange to the Miramichi city limits. The project is roughly $1million.
"As part of this government's $1.6-billion Plan for a Stronger Economy, the department is moving quickly to get tenders called and awarded for the upcoming road construction season," said Transportation Minister Denis Landry. "Doing so assists the province's road builders prepare their staffing and equipment needs. This also helps us create jobs while retaining our workforce here in New Brunswick."
Funding for this project is from the department's capital budget. The 2010-11 department estimates of $439.3 million were announced Jan. 12.
"This is a key route for residents and industry," said John W. Foran, minister of Public Safety and solicitor general. "This is another positive investment by our government as we have made a concerted effort to invest on various routes coming to and from the Miramichi region to help attract business activity and tourism."
