SAINT JOHN (CNB) - The provincial government is investing nearly $300,000 to establish four park-and-ride sites and a connecting hub in Saint John.
The Department of Environment is making the contribution through the New Brunswick Climate Action Fund to establish the sites and a connecting hub at McAllister Place on the east side of Saint John. The intent is to encourage motorists who would otherwise drive into Saint John to use public transit or carpool.
Energy Minister Jack Keir was joined by Saint John Mayor Ivan Court and Chris Titus, chairman of the Saint John Transit and Parking Commission, in making the announcement.
"I am pleased that the New Brunswick Climate Action Fund is supporting this important project for Saint John," said Keir. "Improving public transportation will contribute to significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and is consistent with the commitments made in the New Brunswick Climate Change Action Plan 2007-12."
Keir made the announcement on behalf of Environment Minister Rick Miles and Transportation Minister Denis Landry.
Keir and Court unveiled a two-metre map showing the new park-and-ride locations for the system called ParcoBus:
"This is a positive initiative to encourage motorists to park their cars and help the environment," said Keir. "This program will help Saint John Transit build on the COMEX regional park-and-ride program, whose ridership has grown since 2007; about 300 people use this service daily."
The emission reductions associated with the park-and-ride lots are estimated at 167 t of carbon dioxide every year.
The action fund was established from the province's portion of the federal government's Canada Eco-Trust for Clean Air and Climate Change.
