FREDERICTON (CNB) -- Seventy-two of New Brunswick's top athletes will receive assistance to help them with their training and competitive costs, Education Minister Elvy Robichaud, and minister responsible for the Culture and Sport Secretariat announced today.
The athletes, representing 25 sports, will be awarded a total of $74, 500 under the High Performance Athlete Assistance Program in 2000-2001.
"Our athletes who achieve the highest standard of excellence need support as the financial responsibility at this level becomes greater," Robichaud said. "This program assists talented young athletes as they pursue their goals to excellence."
The individual grants range from $500 to $2,500 based on the results of their 1999-2000 athletic performance, their consistency in improvement over the past few years, and their potential to make the national senior team in their respective sport. Each request for funding is evaluated by the related sport organization, and the Sport, Recreation and Active Living branch of the Culture and Sport Secretariat.
The program is supported by revenue derived from New Brunswick lottery ticket sales, which are placed in the provincial Sport Development Fund.
