HALIFAX (CNB) - New Brunswick artisans won three of four industry awards, and won the awards for best booth and emerging artist during the Craft Awards for Excellence ceremony held in Halifax on Saturday, Feb. 7.

The event was held in conjunction with the Atlantic Craft Trade Show, which showcases Atlantic Canada's fine-craft and giftware industry.

"I am very proud to see New Brunswick craftspeople be recognized as industry leaders," said Wellness, Culture and Sport Minister Hédard Albert. "These awards are testament to the quality and quantity of artistic excellence we are fortunate to have in the province."

Recipients of the awards are Atlantic Canadian craft and giftware producers who personify outstanding standards within the industry.

The Outstanding Exporter Award was presented to Bejewel by Trudy Gallagher, of Fredericton. The business is owned by Trudy Gallagher, and its growth is attributed to increasing exports.

Gallagher also won the Industry Leader/Supporter Award for her contributions to the fine craft industry of Atlantic Canada, not only as an artisan, but as a mentor, teacher, businesswoman and supporter.

Edgewater Gifts and Gallery, owned and operated by Michelle Cline Cadogan, won the Outstanding Retailer Award. The business is located in Miramichi, and is recognized not only for its fine selection of Atlantic Canada-made fine crafts, but for its contributions to the craft industry by educating the public about the value of buying locally handmade fine crafts.

In addition to the Awards of Excellence, Aidan Stanley of Silver Line won the Best Booth award, and Kristyn Cooper of the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design won the Heather Stone Emerging Artist Award.

The Atlantic Canada Craft Awards for Excellence are the principal form of recognition for leadership and excellence for professional craft and giftware producers, and for those who are supporters of the industry in Atlantic Canada.
