Biography

The Honourable Mr. Justice Joseph T. Robertson

Born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Justice Robertson's formative years were spent in Saint John. After graduating from St. Malachy's High School in 1967, he attended Saint Mary's University in Halifax and Ignatius College in Guelph and was granted a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the former institution in 1972. Prior to enrolling in the Faculty of Law at the University of New Brunswick, Justice Robertson worked full-time with Frontier College, an adult education organization headquartered in Toronto. While attending U.N.B. Faculty of Law, Justice Robertson articled with the late John P. Palmer, then the senior partner in the law firm of Palmer, O'Connell, Leger, Turnbull & Turnbull. Justice Robertson received his LL.B. in 1977 and was admitted to the New Brunswick bar in the same year. In 1978 he obtained a Masters of Law from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Justice Robertson returned to New Brunswick and entered private practice with the Moncton law firm of Goodwin & Ellsworth.

In 1979 Justice Robertson began his teaching career as an Assistant Professor of law at the University of New Brunswick. In 1983 he was appointed an Associate Professor and in 1989 promoted to the rank of full Professor. On April 12, 1992 Justice Robertson was appointed to the Federal Court of Appeal and on October 29 to the Court Martial Appeal Court. On July 28, 2000 he was appointed to the New Brunswick Court of Appeal.

Justice Robertson is married to Susan Jean Stewart, formerly of Moncton and has two children.
