Mission
The Staff of the New Brunswick Human Rights Commission promotes equality and seeks to eliminate discriminatory practices and attitudes by administering and enforcing the New Brunswick Human Rights Act and by educating the public about human rights and responsibilities.
Vision
In 2015, the New Brunswick Human Rights Commission is a leader in the promotion and protection of human rights. The Staff of the Commission guides New Brunswick society towards a culture that values diversity, equality and inclusiveness. The Commission is valued by the public who view it as an accessible, impartial and credible organization. The enforcement of the Human Rights Act is viewed as essential and seen as a process of consequence. Citizens understand how the Commission works and why decisions are made.
The Staff of the Commission provides guidance to employers and employees with respect to their rights and responsibilities under the New Brunswick Human Rights Act. It increases public awareness of human rights issues through education and training. It has a province-wide network of partners who assist in the promotion of human rights and the delivery of services.
The Commission is a proactive organization with a culture of continuous improvement. It is adequately resourced with skilled and dedicated staff who feel the Commission is a great place to work.
Strategic Goals and Actions
Key Result Area #1: Mandate
Goal #1.1: To develop productive and positive partnerships with key stakeholders.
Actions:
1.1.1 Develop and implement a stakeholder strategy that identifies key stakeholders, and determines why and how the partnership can be developed.
1.1.2 Develop and implement a plan targeted specifically at building strong relationships with community partners, such as municipal governments, community business organizations and non-profit community organizations.
Goal #1.2: To advance the principle that every person is free and equal in dignity and rights.
Action:
1.2.1 Continue to support the conferring of the Human Rights Award and the Pioneer of Human Rights Award.
Goal #1.3: To develop and implement an effective marketing strategy.
Goal #1.4: To develop and implement an effective education strategy.
Action:
1.4.1 Establish key targets for education based on assessment of need and current expertise within the Staff of the Commission.
Key Result Area #2: Service Delivery
Goal #2.1: To ensure the compliance process is accessible and results in a timely and fair resolution of human rights complaints.
Actions:
2.1.1 Undertake a review of the compliance process.
2.1.2 Implement and evaluate the new complaint form.
2.1.3 Create a strategy to deal with immediate and future backlogs of complaints.
Goal #2.2: To increase transparency about the human rights process and the outcomes.
Action:
2.2.1 Conduct and implement a gap analysis that identifies how transparency in the compliance process can be improved.
Goal #2.3: To optimize the use of technology.
Action:
2.3.1 Investigate how emerging technologies could be used to improve the delivery of services and the operation of the Commission.
2.3.2 Explore options for working with partners to better use new technologies.
