ENVIRONMENT AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT

A. GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

This department's mission is to provide an integrated approach to environmental management, conservation and compliance, and land use zoning and planning. It is also responsible for liaison with municipalities and local service district governance.

C. PROGRAMS, POLICIES OR INITIATIVES IDENTIFIED BY THE DEPARTMENT AS IMPACTING ON WELLNESS:

Environmental Stewardship/Environmental Management and Protection _ Through a comprehensive air, land, and water management approach, including the protection of public water supplies and water quality in lakes and rivers, waste management strategies, the Environmental Trust Fund, enforcement of and compliance with environmental legislation, etc.

Liaison with Communities

Education - The department produces literature in both paper and electronic formats to assist New Brunswickers in making decisions about, and contributing to, the protection of their outdoor environment. This material, along with the programs and activities to support its dissemination, include information on air quality, water quality, home oil tank safety, and waste disposal from pleasure craft.

Physical Environments - The department conducts extensive monitoring programs to measure contaminants in the air, water and soil, as well as laboratory analysis of these environmental media. In partnership with the Department of Health and Wellness, citizens are ap
prised of any indicators for health risk. Additionally, specific programs for drinking water supplies from both ground and surface sources are a major focus of the department's overall water protection programs.

Personal Health Practices and Coping Skills - In conjunction with monitoring and analysis programs, the department oversees or participates directly in initiatives, such as the Smog Forecasting Program and the Pesticides Management Program, aimed at providing information to New Brunswickers which will allow them to take preventive health measures.

D. EMPLOYEE WELLNESS:

Lunch & Learn Series at Argyle Place _ topics such as stress management, employee benefits, retirement seminar, estate planning & wills, gardening tips, flexible work arrangements, the Toastmaster experience, Go for Green (active living & the environment), naturopathic medicine and well field protection program.

Flu vaccines by VON nurse on-site each fall.

Department sponsored Walking Club (May to October)

Marysville Place employees can join the Marysville Place Employment Fitness Program, which gives them access to a weight room, and aerobics and yoga programs.
