FAMILY AND COMMUNITY SERVICES
A. GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This department delivers a comprehensive range of integrated supports to individuals and families, such as child welfare, day care and adoption, income and support programs, housing programs, disability programs, and long-term care programs including nursing home services. The Department serves as a focal point for youth policy, seniors policy and the voluntary sector.
B. MANDATE/PROGRAM SYNOPSIS:
Housing, Social Assistance (income security/case management and benefits), and Family and Community Social Services.
C. PROGRAMS, POLICIES OR INITIATIVES IDENTIFIED BY THE DEPARTMENT AS IMPACTING ON WELLNESS:
All programs and services impact to some extent on health and wellness and/or impact on the determinants of health.
Housing _ includes public housing, rental assistance, non-profit housing and home improvement programs.
Social Assistance _ includes interim assistance, transitional assistance, extended benefits, and special needs benefits. Works in conjunction with the Department of Justice to provide the Family Support Orders Program.
Family and Community Services _
Access & Assessment _ Screening, information provision, Youth at Risk Initiatives, and Transition House funding.
Prevention _ Day Care Services and Child Placement Resources.
Protection _ Adult protection, child protection, children under guardianship, and community agency support. Community agency support provides stable funding to community agencies to support and increase their capacity to provide therapeutic services in their community beneficial to department clients.
Support and Maintenance _ Children with special needs.
Nursing Home Services
Long Term Care (in conjunction with Health & Wellness)
Early Childhood Initiatives (in conjunction with Health & Wellness)
Youth Treatment Program (in conjunction with Health & Wellness and other departments _ Education and Public Safety)
Support Services to Education
Other _ Community Volunteer Program, Health Services Program, and the Day Care Assistance Program. The Community Volunteer Action Program illustrates the department's shared commitment with non-profit community resource agencies to reinforce the community response to the basic needs of low-income people in the community. Provides funding for community projects or initiatives such as food banks, community kitchens, food banks, clothing banks, and furniture banks. Some of this may have gone to TED.
