NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENERGY

A. GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The department serves to manage the natural resources of the province in the best interests of its people. The Energy Secretariat also reports to the Minister.

B. MANDATE/PROGRAM SYNOPSIS:

Forest Management, Fish & Wildlife Management (includes hunter education program, women in the outdoors, bow hunter's program, mandatory firearms safety course)

Minerals and Energy Management

Corporate Services (includes Crown Land Management)

Parks and Natural Areas Management (includes Protected Area Strategy)

Regional Management

C. PROGRAMS, POLICIES OR INITIATIVES IDENTIFIED BY THE DEPARTMENT AS IMPACTING ON WELLNESS:

Natural Resources and Energy programs relating to recreational opportunities for the general public and safety education and training, (hunters, etc.), impact on wellness. These include:

Wildlife Management

Fish and Wildlife Protection

Parks and Natural Areas

Waterways

Protected Areas

Mount Carleton

Sentier NB Trail

D. EMPLOYEE WELLNESS:

Health and safety training programs, including first aid training, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), transportation of dangerous goods, all terrain vehicle operation, snowmobile operation, and defensive driving. Other health and wellness initiatives available to DNRE staff include blood pressure clinics, flu shot program, scent free workplace, ergonomics, air quality and Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP). There are also eight joint Health and Safety committees operating within the department, that are responsible to represent employees with regard to health, safety, and wellness within the workplace.
