Hon. Patrick A.A. Ryan, Q.C., B.A., B.C.L.
Conflict of Interest Commissioner

Commissioner Ryan, Q.C., B.A., B.C.L. Son of M. Allen J. Ryan and Marjorie E. Ryan. Primary education at Fredericton and Halifax, Nova Scotia. Undergraduate and legal education at the University of New Brunswick.

Before being admitted to the bar, Commissioner Ryan's early career was in radio journalism in Bridgewater, N.S., Moncton, Saint John and Fredericton. Called to the Bar in 1956 following a period of Articles with Charles J.A. Hughes Q.C., subsequently Chief Justice of New Brunswick.

Past President of the Law Society of York, Sunbury and Queens Counties. Former senior partner in the law firm of Ryan, Graser and Smith at Fredericton. Honoured by the Law Society of New Brunswick for work on the Rules of Court for New Brunswick. Long time elected member of the Council of the Law Society. On July 8, 2006, the Honourable Patrick A.A. Ryan, Q.C. was honoured by being made a life member of the Law Society of New Brunswick.

Several times Chairman of the Bar Admission Course and Course Leader at its inception. Lecturer in Practice and Procedure at the University of New Brunswick Law School. Deputy Magistrate for the Counties of York, Sunbury and Queens, 1958-1960.

Appointed Queen's Counsel 1973.

Appointed a Judge of the Court of Queen's Bench of New Brunswick, Trial Division, and a Judge ex officio of the Court of Appeal January 24, 1986 effective February 23, 1986, the first Judge of the Court of Queen's Bench assigned to the Judicial District of Woodstock. Appointed a Judge of the Court of Appeal of New Brunswick September 8, 1986.

Elected supernumerary office in the year 2000. Sworn as Administrator of the Province and of the Great Seal of Her Majesty's Province of New Brunswick.

Retired as a judge of the Court of Appeal April 10, 2005. Appointed Commissioner under the Members' Conflict of Interest Act April 12, 2005, with the unanimous approval of the New Brunswick Legislature. Officer of the Legislative Assembly. July 1, 2008, assumed responsibilities under the Public Interest Disclosure Act in his capacity as Conflict of Interest Commissioner. Administration of the Public Interest Disclosure Act has been transferred to the Office of the Ombudsman.

Married Anne B. Murphy R.N. of St. Stephen, 1953. Four sons, Michael, Sean, Jamie and Peter; eight grandchildren.
