ALLAITEMENT

BREASTFEEDING

The breastfeeding initiation rate among newborns was 70% in 2011 in New Brunswick. The Canadian rate was 88%.
The rate of exclusive breastfeeding at 6 months of age was 19% in N.B. (2009-10), significantly less than the national average of 26%.
The World Health Organization recommends that infants be exclusively breastfed for six months, followed by introduction of other foods while continuing breastfeeding to two years of age or beyond.
Among benefits, breastfeeding modestly reduces the risk of obesity in childhood & in later life.

VANESSA TAYLOR, INDUSTRIAL MECHANIC/MILLWRIGHT APPRENTICE

Vanessa Taylor bought her first house this year in Lorneville. She adopted a yellow lab & as she puts it, she is “genuinely happy” with all aspects of her life.

Taylor grew up in Bonny River, a small community outside of St. George. She joined the Millwrights Union 2262 in September 2010, & at the time she was the only female Millwright in the union in NB. She received her certificate in June of 2010 in Saint John at NBCC.

When asked whether she was always interested in becoming a Millwright Taylor replied: “No, definitely not.” After high school she went to university in Fredericton to pursue a degree in social work. “Turns out I really just wanted to party” comments Taylor, “I basically ‘wasted' 3 years & a lot of money at university”. She worked for 5 years at a group home for adults with special needs which allowed Taylor to realize that social work was not the path for her… She decided to make a big change & return to school. After talking to a few of her friends who had pursued a career in the trades, she began researching the opportunities that were offered at NBCC Saint John. The area of Industrial Mechanics attracted Taylor due to its versatility. “In the course you get to make things on a lathe, a milling machine, we also learned different types of welding. It was an awesome course that taught me more than I actually thought I could learn.” As Taylor explains, the name of the certificate is “Industrial Mechanics” but once you work with a union you become a “Millwright”. If you work as a full-time employee with a company then you are a “Journeyman”.

“I am called by the Millwrights Union 2262 for jobs that come up in mills or power plants to name a few places. It could be a scheduled maintenance job or an emergency fix. We replace parts of machinery that have broken or are close to breaking or maybe it's just time for it to be replaced on a scheduled shut down. We could be replacing bearings, fixing conveyor belts, or maybe replacing a part completely. We work on pumps, motors, clutches, or we could have to align equipment. The great thing is that I never know what I will be doing on the next job or who I will be working with. And if there is something that I am unsure of, I always work with a Journeyman that I can swamp with questions if need be. “

In 2006, there were 75,900 construction millwrights & industrial mechanics (except textile) in N.B. 1.5% of those were women…

COMMUNITY LOAN FUND GETTING RESULTS & NATIONAL ATTENTION

Many years back, I wrote Poverty & Plenty, a report that chronicled the inequality of outcomes that exist between Saint John's neighbourhoods… A number of non-profits are trying to close the opportunity gap. The Saint John Community Loan Fund is arguably one of the most innovative, inspired by the worldwide micro-loan movement. In its 12-year existence, it has changed the lives of countless individuals through a combination of coaching, money management seminars, & small loans… A number of the clients are women. Some of the coaching & small-business planning it provides has been embraced by the Canadian Women's Foundation, which is sharing the Saint John experiment with institutions coast to coast.

One Loan Fund participant, a newly confident woman named Sam, spoke in highly personal terms how the loan fund's Power-Up training seminars had made her ready to embrace the twists of today's economy. Seven of the 9 graduates of her Power-Up seminar had gone on to further education or employment opportunities. The Power-Up training initiative was developed in partnership with Urban Core Support Network, & influenced 36 women last year. At its core, the Loan Fund still exists to hand out loans… Roughly 20 small loans are given out every year... A common loan type involves providing deposit money so that a client can safely move from a substandard apartment & into better housing.

HUNDREDS OF WOMEN JOIN CLASS-ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST RCMP

Lawyers expected dozens of women to contact them with allegations after Janet Merlo, a 19-year veteran of the RCMP, filed a class-action civil suit alleging harassment but more than 200 have contacted them. Their allegations include being passed over for an assignment because of sex, taunting, & sexual & physical assault. Merlo said she suffered bullying & verbal abuse throughout her career from 1991 to 2010 when she left due to depression & post-traumatic stress disorder.

Merlo's lawsuit is one of several filed against the national force by women who say they suffered abuse & harassment on the job. Cpl. Catherine Galliford, the public face of the Air India investigation & the task force that arrested serial killer Robert Pickton, is suing the RCMP in a separate case because of harassment over two decades that included sexual assault & intimidation.

ANXIETY & ATTITUDE DIFFERENCES - WOMEN HAVING MEDICAL OR SURGICAL ABORTION

Women who came for an early elective abortion at an abortion clinic answered questionnaires before their abortion, & 2-4 weeks after the abortion. Of the 60 women interviewed, 26 voiced antichoice attitudes about abortion. Anti-choice views were seen in 61% of women having a medical (non surgical) abortion & in 37% of those having a surgical abortion.

The ones with antichoice attitudes were similar to those with prochoice attitudes in age, education, & religion. Their anxiety levels were similar before the abortion. Women who were pro-choice had an anxiety score (range 0-10) of 5.0 before, & 2.7 after the abortion. Women who were anti-choice had an anxiety score of 5.2 before & 4.4 after.

Conclusion: Many women coming to an abortion clinic have antichoice views. This may affect her ability to recover emotionally after the procedure & will have implications for the supportive care they need both before & after. It is important for providers to understand that women undergoing a medical abortion may be more ambivalent about abortion than women undergoing a surgical one.

WOMEN BETTER LEADERS THAN MEN?

From a survey of 7,280 leaders & an examination of 360 evaluations of leaders by peers & bosses re effectiveness & strength on the 16 competencies that research shows are important to leadership: Female leaders excel at developing others & building relationships, exhibiting integrity & engaging in self-development. But the women's advantages were not confined to traditional women's strengths. At all levels, women are rated higher in 12 of the 16 competencies. More women were rated as better overall leaders than their male counterparts & the higher the level, the wider that gap.

Two of the traits where women outscored men to the highest degree — taking initiative & driving for results — have long been thought of as particularly male strengths. Men outscored women significantly on only one competence: the ability to develop a strategic perspective. When only men & women in top management are measured on strategic perspective, their relative scores are the same.

Why are we not engaging & fully employing these exemplary women leaders? Blatant discrimination is a potential explanation. Also, women don't feel their appointments are safe, are afraid to rest on their laurels, feel the need to take initiative.

MEN & WOMEN EQUALLY IRRITABLE

In psychiatric research, irritability has been described as a prominent feature of female-specific mood problems – PMS, etc. A female-specific measure of irritability was eve recently developed. Some have argued for a "male depressive syndrome," also characterized by high irritability… Women are often socialized to hold anger & frustration in, whereas the outward expression of anger & aggression is considered socially acceptable (even desirable) in men. High levels of irritability during teen years are associated with a greater risk of anxiety or depressive disorders during adulthood. Chronically high levels of irritability disrupt sleep & may create stressful situations such as interpersonal conflict…

We asked study participants "What does irritability mean to you?" Many said there are gender stereotypes - the most common being that men tend to display irritability in a more openly aggressive fashion (throw things, fight); women are more passive aggressive (complain to someone, sulk). We administered over 60 possible questions about irritability to over 1,000 study participants. We determined that despite the highly variable ways in which the public & the scientific community have defined irritability, it can be boiled down to a negative emotional state that involves a heightened sensitivity towards events. We found no differences in irritability between men & women. Irritability appeared to vary much more based on factors other than gender, such as age & health status.

WOMEN IN PRISON: BLAMING THE INDIVIDUAL FOR SOCIAL PROBLEMS

Researchers have long claimed that physical abuse & marginalization lead to criminal activity. However, women in prison are taught to blame only themselves for their behavior, according to a new study. There is a connection between the type of abuse experienced by women, marginalization, & whether they will turn to drugs & criminal activity to cope. However, psychiatric & popular discourse portrays female incarceration as the result of poor choices & bad behavior "rather than identifying structural conditions that lead to imprisonment -- including changes in laws, racist & sexist legislation, poverty, lack of resources & jobs, & social vulnerability over the course of one's life."

Women who experience non-sexual physical abuse as well as any type of abuse as adults are more likely to begin using drugs. Those who are victims of sexual abuse as children claim that their imprisonment is a direct nearly inevitable result of the abuse. Marginalized women (ex.: who were unemployed at the time of their arrest or whose parents were also incarcerated) are more likely to turn to drugs to deal with interpersonal violence than women with more resources. "Having few or no options because of their marginalized socioeconomic positions, entrenched racial inequality, & repeated episodes of violence, respondents indicated that criminalized activities became survival mechanisms.”

To prevent female criminal activity, the authors say institutional change & support systems for victims of abuse are needed. "Radical education, community support, decriminalization, job creation, & automatic expungement could work together."
