ATLANTIC MINISTERS CONTINUE TO ADDRESS ONLINE SAFETY FOR GIRLS
|
CHARLOTTETOWN (GNB) – The Atlantic ministers responsible for the status of women met in Prince Edward Island this week to explore opportunities to collaborate on issues of importance to women and girls. |
A key issue discussed was the hypersexualization of girls, which occurs when girls are being treated or depicted as sexual objects.
“The hypersexualization of girls concerns us as ministers due to its consequences on the physical and psychological impact on girls,” said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Marie-Claude Blais, who is also minister responsible for Women's Equality. “These meetings are important because it is by developing strong working relationships within the Atlantic region that we will continue to better serve women and girls in our four provinces.”
The cybersafegirl.ca website has been expanded with a new section containing information on the hypersexualization of young girls.
“Although hypersexualization can be an uncomfortable topic, it is important that we begin this conversation and provide a credible source of information,” said Prince Edward Island's Community Services and Seniors Minister Valerie E. Docherty. “On our website, girls, families, educators and the community-at-large can access information to better understand the issue.”
Girls are flooded by all types of hypersexual images of girls and women through the media. This includes television, music videos, music lyrics, movies, magazines, video games, the internet, social media and advertising. These can affect how girls view themselves and others, and how society perceives them. That is why it is important to be aware of the messages and their potentially negative effects. “WE ARE AT A CRITICAL MOMENT”
Excerpts from the 2013 Report from the National Roundtable on Service Delivery for Trafficked Women and Girls in Canada
What we know
Trafficking for the purposes of sexual exploitation is a deeply gendered practice . Most of the people being trafficked are girls and young women. Most of the people who benefit from their exploitation are men. Trafficking must be viewed in the context of violence against women and girls . It is part of a continuum that includes domestic violence, sexual assault, the normalization of rape culture and the growth of child luring and violent child pornography.
What we learned from experiential women
Girls and young women are typically recruited, lured and groomed by pimps, gangs or peers between the ages of 11 and 15. Most are 13 years old when they are forced into prostitution. By age 18, girls are typically deemed less valuable to their trafficker. Trafficking is an act of coercion. Some girls are monitored, tracked and tattooed to prevent escape. Some have a history of addiction. Others are forced to take drugs as a method of control , or use drugs to self-medicate . Many are told they must pay significant debt, bondage or exit fees . Many are transported from city to city. Some are sold. Many experience trauma – a loss of identity, autonomy and an independent world view.
Remember our Root Causes
The economic inequality that robs women of choices and creates opportunities for men to exploit them; the continued prevalence of violence against women; the historic and continuing experience of colonization and racism; a culture that hyper-sexualizes girls and fuels demand; the inherently exploitive nature of the sex trade. It's about understanding women and girls are worth more than their bodies.

I moved to New Brunswick in 2006 to take up a position as an Assistant Professor at UNB. The first time I had a student sitting in my law school office red-faced with anger and streaming with tears, it was not because of a poor grade or a difficult assignment. It was because that student had been refused a prescription for birth control by a doctor in a walk-in clinic because she was not married and therefore wouldn't be needing it. The reason she came to speak with me was that I had organized a panel on reproductive rights at the law school. My office had become known as a ‘safe space' for talking about reproductive health. Such spaces are much needed in a province where considerable portions of the medical establishment seem to be utterly oblivious to the notion that they are in a helping and not in a judging profession. Since then, I have heard from women who were refused paps, women who were refused information about contraception, women who were refused birth control prescriptions, women who were refused referrals for abortions and women who were treated punitively by their doctors after abortions.
It was therefore with a sense of doom that I participated in a press conference this past week, where the Morgentaler Clinic in Fredericton announced that it will be closing by the end of July. The closure will leave the women of New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island without access to clinic-based abortions and with no reliable place for information about reproductive health. There is no hospital on PEI that provides abortions. Two hospitals in New Brunswick provide approximately 400 procedures annually, with waiting periods of three weeks or more. These waiting periods are in addition to the typical wait of two to three weeks for getting to see one's family doctor should one be so lucky to have one and does not include the time required to find an alternative if one's doctor turns out to be anti-choice. The Morgentaler Clinic has typically provided about 600 procedures a year. According to the Clinic Manager, about 60 procedures are provided to PEI women annually. Without changes to the law and resources, New Brunswick women will lose 60% of capacity for abortion care, PEI women will lose about 50%. The loss of capacity will chiefly affect the most vulnerable women. http://bit.ly/1jte9fa
A CALL TO ACTION: INCREASING WOMEN'S PARTICIPATION IN LEADERSHIP ROLES
The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), in partnership with Status of Women Canada and 6 Canadian municipalities, has developed a project that is national in scope to engage young womens' participation in municipal politics.
Fourteen young women from the Chaleur region have agreed to join this project. They come from a diverse cross-section of the population. They have discussed the issues and barriers to young womens' participation in municipal politics as well as finding solutions to greater civic and political participation of young women within their communities.
This questionnaire aims to validate the barriers identified by the 12 participants of the Head Start- Bathurst Project as well as possible solutions to increasing young womens' role in their communities.
From the information gathered, the participants in the Bathurst region will develop a project to encourage young women, and women, of the region to engage in leadership, and decision-making roles in their community.
Your answers will be kept confidential. Please use the following link https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/FRM967W Or visit our Facebook page: Head Start Bathurst Bon départ
