Role of Psychiatric Units

The regional hospitals' psychiatric units responsibilities are:

  • To provide, at the request of physicians or Community Mental Health Centres, hospital based services, both in-patient and day hospital, for voluntary and involuntary persons who are suffering from acute psychiatric disorders.
  • To offer hospital based 24-hour emergency and consultation service to patients referred by physicians and Community Mental Health Centres.
  • To provide consultation services to Community Mental Health Centres.
  • To provide consultation/liaison services to other hospital medical/surgical units.
  • To participate in education programs for medical interns, nursing students and students in occupational therapy, social work and psychology, and in continuing education of physicians and mental health professionals.
