Atlantic Covered and Naked Oat Registration-Recommendation Test

D.F. Walker1 and A.O.M. Smith1

Abstract: Twenty-six covered and twenty-six naked oat cultivar/lines were evaluated in two tests at Woodstock, N.B. in 1996. Agronomic parameters collected were yield, Hectoliter weight, thousand kernel weight, harvest lodging and plant height. Yields ranged from 3.9-2.3 and 3.0-1.7 tonnes per hectare for the covered and naked oats respectively. The naked cultivar/lines continue to be very tall, ranging from 141-115 centimeters and suffered from severe lodging. The newer naked cultivar/lines appear to be out yielding the recommended cultivars, whereas with the covered oat cultivar/lines, the registered/recommended cultivars have the superior yields.
