The Effect of Nitrogen Application on Milling Wheat

D.F. Walker1 and A.O.M. Smith1

Abstract: Four milling wheat cultivars, AC Walton, AC Voyageur, SS Maestro and Grandin were subjected to five levels of nitrogen applied either all at seeding or split half at seeding and half at Zadoks growth stage 32. There was no response to splitting application rates for any of the parameters measured. Increasing nitrogen levels from 0-50 kgN/ha increased yields in three of the four cultivars tested. Rates higher than the 50 kgN/ha showed a yield decline in all four cultivars. Increasing nitrogen rates from 0-200 kgN/ha showed a positive and consistent increase of protein. Both test weight and thousand kernel weight declined as nitrogen rates were increased. Lodging tended to increase at higher rates of nitrogen application.
