FREDERICTON (CNB) -- Following is a message of condolence issued today by Premier Bernard Lord on the death of former New Brunswick cabinet minister John Stewart Brooks:
"I wish to express my sincere condolences to the family of John Stewart Brooks on his recent passing.
"Stewart Brooks was a dedicated and determined individual who served as cabinet minister under two separate Progressive Conservative premiers. He will be sadly missed by his many friends and admirers."
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Brooks family at this most difficult of times."
Brooks was first elected to the New Brunswick Legislature as the member for Victoria-Tobique in 1952 and re-elected in the general elections of 1956, 1960, 1963, 1967, 1970 and 1974. He served as Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister of Public Works in the late 1950s. He served as Minister of Public Works and Minister of Highways from Nov. 12, 1970 until July 18, 1972. He was named Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development on July 18 and served in that position until he was named chairman of the New Brunswick Electric Power Commission in 1973. He was appointed chairman of the Treasury Board on December 3, 1974.
