Government introduces amendments to Shortline Railways Act (07/02/28)

NB 256

Feb. 28, 2007

FREDERICTON (CNB) - Two amendments have been proposed to the Shortline Railways Act by Transportation Minister Denis Landry.

"The first amendment to the law will allow our shortline railway companies to bring about business improvements without compromising the safety of motorists," Landry said when he tabled the amendments.

This new amendment will permit the minister of transportation to exempt shortline railways from the application of certain regulations under the act if, in his opinion, it is in the public interest and is not likely to compromise safety.

"The amendments to the act will also permit the construction of new rail lines, and will enable our shortline railways to fully contribute to New Brunswick's economy," Landry said.
