Highway safety 2026

Stay safe while traveling through construction zones.

Overview

Every summer, in approximately 150 locations province-wide, road construction crews are working to make our highways safer for you. Highway workers are worried about the speed of the cars and trucks driving by.

Last year, the department recorded three construction zone incidents resulting in injuries, along with 32 near misses.

Private operators (MRDC, Aitkins-Realis, Gateway) on the Trans-Canada Highway (Route 2) and Route 1 also reported a significant increase in incidents, particularly involving trucks failing to comply with reduced speed signage.
